My garage door has become very loud. What is the cheapest fix?
Start with the rollers. Steel rollers with worn bearings are the most common cause of a rumbling door, and swapping them for nylon is inexpensive and makes an immediate difference. After that it is tightening hinges, brackets and track bolts, and lubricating the moving parts properly. Between them those three usually deal with most of the noise without touching the opener at all.
Is a belt-drive opener really quieter than a chain drive?
Noticeably, yes. A chain drive transmits a metallic rattle through the rail and into the structure; a belt drive runs on a reinforced rubber belt and is much smoother. On a house where a bedroom sits above the garage it is the single biggest improvement available. If your opener is original to a 1990s or early-2000s build it is likely near the end of its life anyway.
There is a bedroom above my garage. Can anything be done about vibration?
Quite a lot. Beyond rollers and a belt drive, the opener itself can be isolated from the joists it hangs off, which stops vibration travelling straight into the floor above. Tightening loose hardware helps too, since a rattle carries through structure far better than through air. It is worth mentioning the bedroom when you book so we look at the mount rather than just the door.
My door bangs when it starts to open.
That one is worth taking seriously rather than treating as noise. A bang or sharp jolt at the start of travel usually means the springs are no longer carrying the door’s weight properly, so the opener takes the load instead. Left alone it wears the opener out early and puts strain on cables and brackets. Worth having checked promptly.
I am in one of the townhouses. Does that change anything?
Only in that your neighbor hears it as well. The doors themselves are usually smaller and simpler, which makes most jobs cheaper rather than more complex. Noise fixes are exactly the same — rollers, hardware, lubrication, and the opener if it is original.
