My house is from the 1920s. Can the original door be repaired rather than replaced?
Very often, yes. Springs, cables, rollers, drums and hinges are largely standard and still made, so the mechanical side of an old door is usually straightforward. What is harder is matching a section if a panel is damaged beyond repair. We will always tell you when a repair is the sensible route, because on a house of this age keeping the original door is usually both cheaper and better.
We have several garages on the property. Can you do them all at once?
Yes, and it is far better for both of us. Tell us how many doors there are and roughly when each went in, and we will load accordingly. Doors fitted decades apart need different parts, so knowing in advance is the difference between one visit and three.
Can you match a new door to the style of the house?
Where a replacement is genuinely necessary we work from the existing elevation — panel profile, glazing pattern, hardware style and finish — rather than from whatever is in stock. On a Spanish Colonial Revival or Tudor property a generic steel door is conspicuous, and it is not a saving worth making.
The timber door has become very heavy.
That is moisture rather than anything failing. Timber absorbs it over decades and genuinely gains weight, which puts the door out of balance and overloads springs sized for it when new. The fix is re-balancing and, where needed, springs matched to the door’s actual current weight rather than its original spec.
Can you deal with our property manager rather than us?
